Living With Anxiety

Many professionals do not understand anxiety, depression, and other disorders outside of a textbook understanding. I have heard some doctors say they do not like the x, y, z person with a certain mental disorganization.

None of us need the professionals to like us. Maybe respect us enough to give us the information we need to live life confidently and independently.

Many psychiatrists do not like to label the disorders or speak of the disequilibrium by name to the patient. Unlike if you have arthritis, you do not have the advantage of looking up your own diagnosis to read on your own what feels like it fits or does not apply to your situation.

Many of us have had the experience of sitting in psychiatrists’ offices by the hour, the week, the years to learn very little specifically about our medical condition in terms of self care.

Medication does help. Many disorders can not be managed without medicine. The disordered thinking is too strong for self talk or actions by themselves.

We are what we think. What we think about is what we become. If you think depressing thoughts, you will become depressed. The same is true of anxiety. If I worry about my daughters cross country trip obsessively with all the what if that can happen, I can become very anxious because of my stinking thinking. While she is driving for those weeks, I have a choice of distracting my thoughts by reading, going for a walk, and other forms of activity to keep my mind from ruminating or dwelling on the fears.

There are good motivational tapes borrowing from sales gurus, that help us get our minds on another track. If you had drinking in your original family, why not try ALANON. Their meetings help you get your mind reorganized. There is plenty of support. Others are in the same boat.

Mental anguish feels like we are alone, but, in fact, we are not alone: there are millions in the same tub.

Over the years I have developed lots of hobbies, such as painting and ceramics and golf. All have the advantage of having to focus on something very immediate so that I can live in the moment for awhile. Some use meditation, prayer, yoga, and reading to keep the mind focused on the here and now.

Anxiety and depression are like muscle spasms or cramps. The habit of the mind needs to exercise itself out of the preoccupation. The mind and the chemical of the brain get the feelings tracking in the same way, ad nauseum.

When you are depressed it is hard to move. With the help of doctors and medication, you can get to the point of feeling better enough to take some control of your life. That means choosing who and what you want in your life. You are the artist and your life is the portrait.

Anxiety and Depression is caused by an imbalance of brain chemistry. Symptoms are normally dealt with by drugs, such as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) like Paroxetine (Paxil), Sertraline (Zoloft) and Fluoxetine (Prozac).

Little do doctors tell you that imbalances in brain chemistry are actually due to poor diet, an unsatisfactory sex life, lack of exercise and lack of support in relationships. Most if not all of these issues are ignored by the average doctor before they administer antidepressant drugs.

There is a lack of general mainstream holistic health information and knowledge. People are just unaware of what factors are causing all the problems in their lives. Love and support in relationships helps produce serotonin (brain chemical of satisfaction, comfort and relaxation). Exercise also balances brain chemistry through the production of endorphins, and this together with correct diet the healthy production of dopamine (brain chemical of clarity, attention, interest and motivation).

There is no evasive short cut to living a healthy and fully functional life. There is no immediate miracle cure to anxiety and depression. It is up to the responsible person to learn about healthy diet, which in itself has the power to remove anxiety and depression by it’s roots. It is up to healthy person to exercise in a healthy way. It is up to the loving person to create a healthy loving fully functional life in all ways to facilitate his or her needs for love and support in relationships in order to create healthy brain chemistry.

There are two ways of dealing with anxiety and depression

1.) The most popular but unhealthy way is to suppress the symptoms, by taking antidepressants, eating junk food, drinking alcohol or smoking cigarettes or drugs. This may work temporarily for some people, but for those who are sensitive or for those who’s soul is longing for love and freedom it only leads to more pain and suffering. This method may also include refusing to take responsibility for your problems by depending on others such as the medical establishment. With this method you may find yourself anxious and depressed for many years to come, until you decide to take responsibility for your life.

2.) The second method normally occurs after a lot of suffering in life and with many years of experiencing anxiety and depression. After a lot of soul searching you may stumble across yoga, healthy living, correct diet, healthy relationships and spirituality. You may research natural holistic cures for anxiety and depression and be well on your way to recovery and creating a glorious future. The power to create a healthy and happy life is in your hands. It is lost when you refuse to take responsibility by depending on others such as the medical establishment.

How Food Can Reduce Your Anxiety

The food you eat can have a big effect on your anxiety. It can affect the way your body deals with anxiety-provoking situations and your diet may also be one of the actual causes of your anxiety! So take a look at the 5 tips below and see how you can improve your diet, eat the right foods and reduce your anxiety.

Reduce your caffeine

If you experience anxiety, then one of the first things you can do is to remove caffeine from your diet. Caffeine makes your heart race, makes you urinate more and makes it difficult to sleep - all of these are also symptoms of anxiety. Caffeine will just make you feel worse and make it difficult to judge whether your symptoms are a result of anxiety or from the caffeine! So not only will you not be sure what is causing the symptoms, you might also find that you are suffering from the symptoms twice - not a good situation! Caffeine can be found in tea, coffee, chocolate (particularly dark chocolate), fizzy drinks and some medication. Check the labels to be sure. Too much alcohol and/or nicotine will also increase the symptoms of anxiety, so it is best to steer clear of these stimulants too.

Try these vitamins and minerals

Magnesium helps relaxes the muscles and reduces adrenaline. Taking a magnesium supplement can help with a range of anxiety-type symptoms such as palpitations, faintness, hyperventilation and insomnia. You may also want to consider taking a Vitamin B complex supplement which can be beneficial or eat more of the following foods: leafy green vegetables, whole grains and fish.

Ditch the refined sugar

Reducing the amount of refined sugar you eat may also help to control anxiety. The sugar found in refined foods such as white bread, ready made biscuits and cakes and processed food will create mood swings - when you have eaten these types of food you will initially feel great, then as the effect wears off you start to come down from the ‘high’. These mood swings can trigger anxious feelings and the physical side effects such as shaky hands or palpitations can also trigger anxiety. By changing your diet so that you eat less processed food and more fruit, vegetables, wholegrains, fish etc, you will be giving your body a head start in controlling anxiety and its symptoms.

Drink more water

It is really easy to become mildly dehydrated and this will affect your body. This is one I always struggle with and when I make an effort to drink more water, I always feel less anxious… Mild dehydration can result in symptoms like dizziness, clammy hands and headaches - again, this will either worsen existing anxiety symptoms or make you think you’re anxious when you’re not! If you don’t enjoy drinking large amounts of water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime as flavour. A cup of hot water mixed with fresh lemon juice is a great start to the day and lemon has digestive and antiseptic qualities.

When to eat meals

Some people also find that their anxiety starts or becomes worse just before mealtimes. It is thought that low blood sugar just before mealtimes may cause this. You can help prevent this by eating small but frequent meals which will help to stabilize your blood sugar levels - big gaps between meals destabilizes your blood sugar. Rather than eating three main meals a day, try eating five or six small meals throughout the day and see if this improves your anxiety symptoms.

So there you go. 5 great tips to improve your diet and reduce your anxiety. When trying any of these suggestions, keep a diary from the beginning so you can keep track of how you feel - it does not need to be complicated. Just making a note each day of the time and type of anxiety symptom (or lack of anxiety symptoms!) will help you see if your symptoms are lessening or maybe even disappearing so you can decide if your dietary change is working for you.

Anxiety - Worry Just Makes It Worse

Do you sometimes find that you just can not get rid of those niggling thoughts that play on your mind? Maybe they keep you awake in the middle of the night - or maybe they are always at the back of your mind and it is just one more thing you have to contend with during the day. As if anxiety wasn’t enough! Well, worry no more - and reduce your anxiety at the same time. Here are 3 great tips to help you cope:

Turn worry into problem solving

  • Write about the situation which is worrying you - put down all your thoughts and feelings associated with it.
  • Write down all the things which you can do to improve or solve the situation - whether they are realistic options or not.
  • Look at each idea and decide whether it is something which you might be able to use. Mark all the ideas which you might be able to implement.
  • Pick 2 or 3 ideas which you can put into practice - and decide when you will start using each idea. Go on - pick a date!

Worry time!

  • If you find that you worry off and on during the day, put aside a time of day when you will specifically allow yourself to worry (but not at night - that really is not conducive to a good nights sleep!). Give yourself 30 minutes maximum for your worry time.
  • Be very strict with yourself and if you start to worry outside of this time, remind yourself that you can only worry within the allotted time slot.
  • When you reach that time, allow yourself to worry if you want to but often you will find that you don’t feel like worrying when you allow yourself to!
  • If you do worry, write down your worries and when you have finished your allotted time, look at your worries and pick which one you want to deal with. Create an action plan to resolve the particular worry you have selected.

Think yourself positive

At any time of the day or night, when you start to worry (or even if you’re not worrying - you can never practise too much), take some time to repeat these positive thoughts to yourself. The power of positive thinking should never be underestimated. Oh, and say them out loud with conviction!

  • “I am going to be alright”
  • “I can do this”
  • “It is ok to make mistakes”
  • “Things may not happen the way I want them to, but I can cope with it”
  • “I have coped before and I can cope again”

Stop Being A Perfectionist And Reduce Your Anxiety

Being a perfectionist can mean that you are increasing your anxiety without even realizing it. Wanting to do things to the very best of your ability, each and every time, puts a lot of pressure on yourself. It means that you are constantly thinking that you could (and should) do things to perfection.

How do you know if you are a perfectionist? Well, a big give-away is that you will often find that you are always expecting a lot of yourself and others. You will have high standards but alongside this, you will always want to reach those high standards. You will find it hard to forgive yourself if you think you have fallen short of those standards. Do you recognize these traits in yourself?

What does being a perfectionist mean for me? Each time you start telling yourself that you have not done something properly, you are being self-critical. These negative feelings can generate feelings of anxiety in you which keep the cycle of anxiety going. By constantly beating yourself up over things which you think you should have done better, you are disempowering yourself and reinforcing negativity.

How can I stop being a perfectionist? Well, there are several things you can do. Perfectionism is comes from the way in which you think and particularly the way in which you talk to yourself in your mind. If you can change the way in which you talk to yourself, you can start to learn to demand less from yourself. Use the following exercise to practice changing your ’self-talk’.

Think about situations where you are hard on yourself and might be self-critical.

  1. Make a list of the negative comments you say to yourself.
  2. Now find a positive comment you can use to replace the negative comment. For example, a negative comment might be “I just can not do anything right”. You can replace this with a positive comment such as “What I do is usually good enough”.
  3. Continue working through your list until you have replaced all the negative comments with positive ones.
  4. Each day, pick one negative comment and practice saying the positive comment in its place. If you keep practicing one positive comment per day, you will soon learn to change the way you think.

You can combine this techniques with a commitment to treat yourself as you would your best friend, that is, be less demanding and more supportive of yourself. If you learn to be realistic about what you expect from yourself, you will dramatically reduce the anxiety and stress that you create within yourself. Remember - it does not have to be perfect - just good enough!
