Winning the War on Osteoarthritis Joint Pain

Osteoarthritis is the most common type of arthritis, affecting about 21 million Americans. This degenerative disease causes limited range of motion in the affected joints and can affects the most basic of daily activities. In the worst cases, osteoarthritis results in debilitating pain.

Unlike other forms of arthritis, which are genetically linked, osteoarthritis affects people of every race, age and gender… athletes and couch potatoes alike. Despite the seemingly random nature of osteoarthritis, there are certain risk factors for developing the disease. Injury, aging and overweight all contribute to one’s risk. Athletes, such as soccer and tennis players, are particularly susceptible to developing osteoarthritis due to the abnormal wear and tear on the weight bearing joints of their bodies.

Because of the progressive nature of osteoarthritis, continued use of the damaged joints causes the damage to worsen and pain to increase. Identifying osteoarthritis early can mean the difference between a lifetime of manageable or excruciating pain. Moreover, while it is possible to identify osteoarthritis early, it is impossible to cure the condition… this is why early detection and treatment are so vital.

In most cases, osteoarthritis develops over time and the pain is not constant. You may experience a stiff joint at first - particularly when rising from sleep or after prolonged periods of sitting. Perhaps your knee “gives out” when walking down stairs or crouching down. These could be signs of osteoarthritis.

The most important advice you may receive is to NOT ignore the pain and assume it will “just go away.” If it is, indeed, osteoarthritis, the pain will not decrease with time. Taking action NOW is key to managing pain and keeping yourself healthy.

The first course of action many people take is over-the-counter or prescription anti-inflammatory medications, called NSAIDs. These popular medications are advertised as cure-alls for whatever ails you, but they do not come without risks. From gastrointestinal upset to stroke, for some patients the treatment is worse than the disease! In fact, NSAIDs do nothing more than decrease inflammation temporarily. As the patient continues to use the medications, a larger dose is required to achieve a minimum level of relief.

There is another option for osteoarthritis suffers wanting immediate and lasting relief. With a lot of medical practitioners onboard now, more and more people are turning to natural supplementation that has proven itself effective over and over again - glucosamine and chondroitin.

To understand why glucosamine and chondroitin supplementation are so effective, it is important to understand what happens in a joint affected by osteoarthritis. Another name for osteoarthritis - wear-and-tear arthritis - gives some clue - the repeated use of a joint, “wear and tear,” wears away the cartilage cushion in affected joints. The cartilage is worn away too quickly to be replenished and inflammation results as the bones make contact with each other.

Whereas NSAIDs provide only temporary relief by decreasing inflammation, supplementation with glucosamine and chondroitin gives temporary and long-lasting relief. How? By giving the affected joints a booster shot of sorts with the very molecules needed to replenish damaged cartilage - glucosamine and chondroitin.

All supplements are not created equal, however, so it is vitally important to choose the best, highest-quality supplements available. Closing in on the one million bottles sold mark, Syn-flex (Synflex) Premium Liquid Glucosamine offers relief you can count on.

With a premium blend of eleven ingredients, Syn-flex is formulated to work synergistically for maximum relief in minimum time. Synflex Premium Liquid Glucosamine offers dependable relief and offers 2 formulations for people along with a Syn-flex for Pets label.

Gout Treatment - What to Do When Your Foot is Shiny Red, Swollen, and About to Explode

Gout, gout go away, come again another day…or better yet, don’t come back at all! I wish I could say that there was a wand that could magically make Gout… “POOF”! and disappear. Unfortunately, no one invented such a gadget yet. Even a Dr. prescribed medication that could prevent Gout from turning me into a limping, irritable wreck would appease my quest for a cure. Well, I’m sorry if you came here in hopes for a magic wand or a perfect medicine that wouldn’t give you more side effects than the actual problem. However, there is help and hope for all you fellow Gout sufferers out there. Although I can’t suggest a cure that will allow you to ingest everything your heart and appetite desires, I can share some tips that I found to be helpful.

So you ‘accidentally’ ate something you knew you shouldn’t have and now you are going through a painful regret session. You should have stayed away from those purine-rich foods but you didn’t. There’s no turning back at this point. You’re already feeling the tingling, numbing sensation on your big toe. All you can really do at this point is think positive and pull out your Rolodex of options, you can either, head to your garage, pick up your buzz saw and sever your toe off (you can’t tell me this hasn’t crossed your mind when you had a Gout attack underway) or head to your medicine cabinet and surrender to Aleve, Advil or some type of Ibuprofen. I have an emergency Advil bottle for my car, my medicine cabinet and office. I’m telling you, it saves me almost all the time.

During a Gout flare up, you should also get bed rest. Meaning, this may not be the best time to participate in your company’s soccer tournament. However, this is a perfect time and reason to get pampered at home. Perhaps, breakfast served to you in bed or a nice little back rub while your bubble bath is running? You do as you please…or at least what you think you can get away with. Bottom line, try not to be on your feet too much because doing so will aggravate and worsen your flare. You should also apply an ice pack onto the affected area. This will help lessen the swelling and also helps to alleviate some of the pain.

I also found through experience that drinking plenty of water and or fluids helped to dilute the uric acid in my blood which helped me to get better faster! You can also experiment with cherry juice or a half-pound of cherries. It is said that the Vitamin C in cherries will also help lower your uric acid level. There is one caveat, if you are going to drink a half pound of cherry juice and a whole jug of water in one sitting, you may be getting up on your feet to use the bathroom more than you prefer. You can also practice deep breathing exercises and meditation to assist your blood circulation.

Last and definitely my least favorite, you can see a Doctor. The Doc will measure your uric acid level so that they can try to predict your chances of future Gout attacks. They can prescribe you medications. Most of the medications will not stop Gout when it is already underway, but it will reduce symptoms in the future. Some medications will actually increase your gout symptoms for at least 6-12 weeks. After that time period, the medicine could actually help prevent future attacks. If you’re a trooper, this may be the option for you. Either way you look at it, at least you have options. You can try one option, two options or go for it all. I hope this helps. Good luck in experimenting with these Gout treatment options!

Coping with the Pain of Ankle Arthritis

Patients who suffer from “ankle arthritis” are actually dealing with osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis which has settled in the ankle joints. A lot of pressure is put on ankle joints, because they bear the brunt of the entire weight of the body. When you pile all of your weight on sore joints and take a step, there’s bound to be pain. What’s worse, ankle joints are ball joints which rotate in all directions, so the cartilage will deteriorate even faster than in other joints.

Ankle Pain Stemming from Other Causes

Never just assume that any pain you have in your ankles and feet is being caused by arthritis. These pains can be caused by many different things, including lower back and hip problems. Before just shrugging your shoulders and thinking, “Its only arthritis”, make an appointment with your doctor for an exam. Only then will he be able to tell what’s causing your infirmity.

The rarer diagnosis of rheumatoid arthritis can be made by taking a simple blood test. If you are diagnosed with the more common osteoarthritis, it may mean that you’ll be facing a regimen of intensive treatments for the rest of your life.

Sprained ankles are fairly common and cause sufferers a lot of pain, even more so that an actual break. To treat a sprain, doctors will prescribe ‘RICE’. No, not the stuff you eat. In this case RICE means:
• Rest - and give your ankle a chance to heal.
• Ice Compression - use cold compresses to reduce inflammation and pain.
• Elevation - keep the leg raised to lessen swelling and pain.

You may be able to tell if you have ankle arthritis by watching for the following symptoms:
• Recurring pains without a reason
• Swelling and stiffness suddenly occurring
• Pain remedies won’t stop the pain and stiffness
• A big toe that’s very painful and wants to turn to the side
• Bunions that hurt badly even when not being touched

When a person first develops ankle arthritis, simple OTC pain medications will probably be all the treatment needed. The disease is incurable, though, and will progress over time. It may get to a stage where your doctor wants to treat the condition much more aggressively.

If you’ve tried everything looking for relief from arthritis pain, you may want to do what many others have done, and try some form of home remedy. Doctors and the FDA frown on such practices as herbal medicines and yoga, but there are a lot of people who swear by the treatments claiming they have stopped the progression of the disease and even caused some improvement.

Arthritis, Joint Pain & Inflammation - Turmeric May Be the Answer

The reason you are reading this report is probably due to your frustration in not finding the information you need readily. So without further ado:

To better understand possible ingredients that can be used to treat joint pain, we must first understand what this pain stems from and how it may come about. Joint pain or arthritis can begin as a result of injury, repetitive actions that cause stress on a particular joint, an auto-immune disease (which occurs when the body “attacks” itself because it believes a body part is foreign), or just as a result of age and the general wear and tear associated to it. After time, the cartilage in your joints begins to wear away and this cartilage is what makes the movement in your joints smooth; without it the bones will actually rub together causing pain, stiffness or inflammation (swelling). Inflammation is meant to be a healthy response wherein the white blood cells and chemicals in our body attempt to fight off infection or viruses. However, the occurrence of auto-immune diseases result in our body’s defense system triggers an inflammation when there are no such viruses or infections, thus causing damage to its own tissues. This is the onset of one of the many subsets of arthritis.

Did you know that there are over 100 types of arthritis and that roughly 1 in 7 people in America have it? That’s pretty substantial! Now don’t think you have arthritis immediately because your knee or finger hurts. If joint pain is something that been bothering you for a short amount of time, you should consult your doctor to find the cause. For those who know they have arthritis, they know.

So as I have read about arthritis and inflammation and general joint pain, I came across an ingredient that has apparently been used for thousands of years in the east that the doctors out here in the west are just stumbling upon and studying. It’s an herb in the ginger family called Turmeric. If you are familiar with holistic medicine then you will probably be familiar with Ayurvedic practices. Let me be forthright with you when I say that I am not promoting either of these. However, I have read up on it and found that some if it may have some credibility. I bring them up because in Ayurvedic practice, which is rooted in 5,000 years of wisdom, is based on a principle that among other things, vegetables and minerals hold a medicinal value. Turmeric is no different and is widely used throughout India and Asia. Its uses have primarily been as an antiseptic for cuts and bruises, so much so that Johnson & Johnson sells a Turmeric band-aid in India. They use it to keep their skin aglow, it’s used in sunscreen, and is also a good anti-scarring agent when mixed with milk and applied to the skin. It is used through Asia to help with stomach problems You will find it in every house across India and isn’t it ironic that the spread of cancer doesn’t even compare to that in the US? What does this have to do with my joints???

In the past couple years, western doctors have begun to research other effects of Turmeric, for its uses against Arthritis and joint inflammation, cancers, and Cystic Fibrosis. The findings are incredible and show that Turmeric is a great agent to decrease the pain and inflammation of your joints.

In the Medical News Today on November 3, 2006 was an article about a study performed by Dr. Janet L. Funk, MD at the University of Arizona College of Medicine regarding the effects of Turmeric and its ingredient curcumin. Her findings indicated that the use of the Turmeric in animal models completely inhibited the onset of rheumatoid arthritis. It provided insight into the reaction of transcription factors when curcumin extract is introduced. A transcription factor can best be described as a protein in the system that controls whether genes turn on or off. When a certain transcription factor is turned on it begins the inflammation process, thus creating pain. However, the curcumin extract actually inhibits the transcription factor, which results in it’s remaining off; thus the inflammation does not occur. (Summary - Turmeric contains curcumin extract, which inhibits inflammation, thus reducing pain as a result of arthritis). The suggestion is that turmeric as a nutritional supplement may have the same effects as pharmaceuticals.

The same is said by the Brain Research Institute of The University of California Los Angeles in an article by Hilary E. MacGregor on February 6, 2006. However, they go even further to say Turmeric is a powerful antioxidant, and could possibly be used in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s and more.

Other institutions around the country including John Hopkins, Duke, and Texas University, are doing similar studies, and even studying Turmeric’s effects on cancer.

Throughout the years Turmeric has been used not only as an anti-flammatory, but to improve circulation and digestion. Within the field of Ayurveda, doctors have valued Turmeric for its fluoride.

With that, I will wrap up this report.

I would like to make it perfectly clear that I am not an expert in the field of medicine.

Remedies For Gout - Get Instant Relief!

Folklore has it that the only remedies for gout are the secrets granny told you. Well, according to today’s arthritis experts, Granny was right! Not only do the experts agree with Grandma, but they also recommend some of these wise traditional herbal cures, and what’s more, most of them are in your kitchen.

The symptoms caused by gout are sudden attacks of joint pain, which can be excruciatingly severe. These pains are caused by an increased concentration of uric acid.

Foods that are high in purine, commonly known as puric acid, should be eliminated in the diet. Some of the foods you should avoid are red meats, organ meats and shellfish, and you can add alcohol to the list, also.

Some doctors offer drugs as remedies for gout. Drugs lower the uric acid in the body. Drugs can be effective in treating gout, but sometimes it isn’t good enough, and there are people who prefer using only natural remedies.

Dr Jeff Sands offers a report that discusses a remedy found in your kitchen that simply works magic! His report is based on years of extensive research and his personal and very painful experiences.

One of the most effective remedies for gout are what the doctors call the ’synergistic effect’, a combination of celery seed and guaiacum which are popular herbal remedies. Celery seed is known as a natural diuretic and believed to help remove uric acid from our bodies. If other herbs like capsicum, ginger and sarsaparilla are added, it makes an even better overall effect.

There are many foods that can help your body lower the uric acid levels. Other home remedies for gout include:

  • Eating fruit which is high in vitamin C such as, grapefruit, oranges, pineapple, strawberries, and last but not least; cherries and cherry juice, which are one of the best remedies for gout, as they contain large amounts of natural anti-inflammatory chemicals.
  • Taking apple cider vinegar is a well known remedy for gout. Place two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar with a teaspoon of honey in a cup of approximately eight ounces of warm water, stir well and drink at least three cups a day. This recipe can relieve your body of the painful symptoms of gout.
  • Drinking 8-10 glasses of water per day flushes away toxins and dilutes the uric acid levels.
  • Regular exercise relieves joint pain and nourishes the joint cartilage, removes wasted products and strengthens the muscles around the joints.
  • Add two cups of Epsom Salts to your warm water as the bathtub fills and soak in the tub until the water begins to lose the heat. Epsom Salts contain magnesium, and raising these levels could improve your circulation along with lowering your blood pressure.

Gout is not curable, but as long as your remedies for gout include proper treatment and diet, it is 100% controllable. So, do not despair, instant relief is in your kitchen right now!

Top 3 Phobia’s of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Phobia #1 If I am taking Enbrel I will be susceptible to infectious diseases

Phobia #2 If I am taking MTX, I stand a good chance of getting sick.

Phobia #3 If I am taking prednisone my immune system will weaken and I’ll be sick all the time.

Here is the first and most important aspect of any of these rheumatoid arthritis products. You can’t get your hands on them without a doctor’s approval (thank goodness). If and when you are diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) your doctor will explain the facts of each drug, including its side effects and what to watch out for. He/she will inform you of your next visit and schedule regular checkups. They will be your best teacher so listen carefully to what they have to say.

The most frustrating aspect of rheumatoid arthritis is “how your body can actually start attacking itself”. When the R & D companies figure this out, they are going to be very rich and billions of people WORLD WIDE will be extremely happy. Now, let’s talk about the phobia’s that are of great concern to all rheumatoid arthritis patients.

If you talk to rheumatoid arthritis patients you are going to get a zillion different answers that all boil down to 2 answers. Best wishes to you and I hope you have many arthritis pain free days.

  • Yes, I am susceptible to flu’s and infections
  • No, I have not experienced more flu like symptoms or infections.

Just like anyone without rheumatoid arthritis, some people will be more susceptible and others will not. According to the drug manufacturers fine print, taking Enbrel, MTX or Prednisone can lower your immune system and if you find yourself with a cold, flu or infection you need to stop taking these drugs. Many new rheumatoid arthritis patients are so worried about that they take extreme caution beyond what a normal rheumatoid arthritis patient would take. I don’t blame them and you should be concerned as well.

However, you have people in all walks of life; teachers, bus drivers, executives, doctors, lawyers, etc. who have rheumatoid arthritis and they are exposed all the time to people who are sick. Some catch that cold, others don’t. Experience is your best teacher and you should be extremely cautious in the beginning and lighten up as time passes and you become more experienced.

Here are few things all rheumatoid arthritis patients can do to safe-guard themselves.

1. Wash their hands frequently

2. Carry Clorox or Germ X Wipes with you when you are away from home

3. Be careful of exposure to people who have cold, flu like symptoms

4. Wipe anything that your hands come into contact with-which could make you a germo-phobiac

What about the healing process of those who have rheumatoid arthritis?

Again, experience will tell you the truth and some people will take longer to heal and others will not. That can greatly depend on many factors including how you treat the wound or cut, do you use topical anti-bacterial creams and do you cover your wound up.

One rheumatoid arthritis patient told me they visited a allergist and had some blood work done. Thankfully for this person, the blood work told the allergist they have a very strong immune system and they do not be too paranoid. Ask your doctor if they would recommend visiting an allergist to determine how strong their immune system is.

I’m thankful I do not have rheumatoid arthritis, however some of my family members do. They try very hard to lead a normal life and the one thing I am most proud of is:

They are determined not to let rheumatoid arthritis control their lives.

They came to grips with the fact they have rheumatoid arthritis and they have gone through the mind games, depression and such, but they all came out of it and are now controlling their attitude and that is probably what I am most proud of. They are taking control of their lives and deal with it as needed.

Osteoarthritis and Enzyme Therapy - Is Your Body Getting The Enzymes It Needs For Fast Recovery?

Enzymes are the life force energy and with out them our bodies cannot function properly. Researchers have found more than 3,000 kinds of enzymes in the human body. In the past we have being dependent on getting our enzymes from fresh fruits, vegetables, and grains, but unfortunately our lives seem to keep us running like a jet plane on warp speed from one event to the next.

We manage to squeeze in some kind of food from a card board box or a fast food restaurant some where in between our hectic schedule of dropping the kids of at school, going to work, making dinner or working out. The list just seems to keep going before we finally reach the end of the day maxed out wondering how the heck we are going to do it all again tomorrow. Does this sound familiar? Now throw in some arthritis pain or illness on top of that and you are the jet plane trying to function with out fuel.

What Are We Feeding Our Bodies?

Most foods are frozen, baked, fried, canned, dried or irradiated. All of these processes KILL enzymes. Yes you may be exercising and you probably take supplements and minerals. But if you feel ill most of the time, you are in pain, lethargic, weight problems, skin breakouts or you just seem to catch every single bug that is floating around. The chances are you are enzyme deficient.

Why Do We Need Enzymes?

Enzymes are responsible for every single process in the body breathing, blood circulation, digestion every single cell is on a mission and each one depends on these essential enzymes to accomplish its job.

How Does Your Body Benefit From Enzyme Supplements?

Since most of our food or supplements do not contain the essential enzymes then it is like putting water in your gas tank. How would your car run if you put in water? It would run like your body unable to fight disease, inflammation, pain or any kind of illness you may be dealing with. The supplements or medication are like oil in the car, if you are not adding all of the right components, such as, gas then the car cannot operate regardless of all of the other components you have put in there, and neither can your body.

And now I would like to invite you to find out more about fighting joint and muscle pain by visiting http://www.LivingWellPainFree.com and http://www.OrganicaSupplements.com

Gold Digging for Health

My younger sister was a pest, as most siblings are. She would bite, pinch, or scratch herself and tell our parents that another sister and I did it, just so we would get a whippin’. I had had about enough of it!

Suzie loved jewelry, in particular gold jewelry and rings. We lived on a farm, so on occasion the cows would get out and leave calling cards in the yard. While out playing one day, I called Suzie over to one of the cow piles. I told her that there was a gold ring in it, but that you had to get closer to see it. On hands and knees, she put her face close to the pile, searching for the ring. I placed my hand on the back of her head and pushed her face in the pile so she could get a good look! I know, I know, I’m terrible. I didn’t feel bad about it then and I don’t feel any regrets now. It was well-deserved. She didn’t think it was funny then, but we both laugh about it now. I like gold too, but I had never considered it to have therapeutic benefits, other than the jewelry made from it. A piece of gold makes any lady feel good!

If you have been reading my blogs for very long, you know that I am an avid believer in alternative therapies. I believe in physicians and medicines too, but a pill is not my first choice of treatment for what ails me. Massage therapy, chiropractic care, aromatherapy, these are all avenues of natural healing that I practice. I don’t normally endorse products either, but I have found a product that is really amazing! It’s called TP Gold. TP Gold is a topical analgesic lotion that provides pain relief from arthritis, tendonitis, bursitis, fibromyalgia, joint and muscle pain, and helps to reduce swelling, pain, and soreness caused by sports injury. Evidently, one of the ingredients is particles of gold. This is what sets it apart from other lotions of its kind. They don’t have gold in them.

I was a skeptic at first, like I tend to be, because we are so inundated with people trying to push some miracle drug or supplement on us. So, to satisfy my curiosity, I started surfing the web for any research on the therapeutic benefits of gold. The Chinese have been using gold in medicine since 2500 BC. One might say this knowledge has been on the slow boat from ..:China to the U.S. of A. Unless it is in pill form, and a pharmaceutical rep has given the physicians samples, we probably won’t have access to it through our doctors. I found so much information regarding the use of gold for treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, the use of gold compounds to compound action of the immune system, and lots of studies that are being done with gold compounds to treat cancer. That was enough to convince me to give it a try.

For four years I have had plantar fasciaitis, which is a chronic inflammation of the bottom of the foot. It has been a constant source of pain and frustration for me. I decided to give this lotion a try. The relief was immediate! I am confident that I might see some results over the long haul with this lotion. That worked so well, that I slathered some on my computer strained neck and it really made a difference.

PLEASE BE CLEAR that I am not a doctor! I don’t diagnose any ailment or prescribe any drugs or medication. Consult your own physician and use at your own risk. This is an over the counter lotion. I am just sharing the information with you, because I love to help people, particularly when it comes to pain relief. Someone gave me a sample of it and I am going to order some more.

As a fitness instructor, I always have some kind of injury, so it will be nice to have something on hand. The advertising says that there are no systemic side effects.

If you are in the mood for gold digging, I know where you can strike it rich! Go to www.tpgold.com for ordering information. When I called to inquire about it, they said that they are trying to get it into drug stores, physical therapy clinics, and to anyone who is in chronic pain. I am going to request that my pharmacy carry it, so that I don’t have to order it. There are phone numbers you can call as well. 1-800-772-3561 and 1-865-966-4705. Let me know if you order it and if you get relief like I did. I would be interested to know your experience with it.

If you would like to do your own therapeutic gold research, here are a few places to get you started:
