Lower back pain represents a real basic irritant for many people throughout the world. They cry and cringe, holding their painful backs while complaining for what appears to be the hundredth time. The spinal column is really tough and very tender simultaneously. It can hold a few hundred pounds of muscle and fatty tissue, but can also give out with just the slightest incorrect turn. Muscle tissue can only extend so much before it starts to tear.

Stretching your body on a regular basis functions as an immediate remedy for back pain. Therefore create the time in your schedule to properly stretch your limbs and muscles.

Solving the details of what causes lower back pain can be as easy as preparing a list of your habitual activities. There is a lot of activity going on beneath your skin of which you are not always aware. Some real muscle damage may have occurred as you were playing around on any given day. You might not recall every motion you did to wind up being in pain but your body remembers. Muscular tissue and nerves have a more effective memory than the individual in which they reside.

The Best & Quickest Exercise to Relieve Sciatica

Sciatica, I’m sure you know, is a real “pain in the butt”. It affects your day to day life and stops you enjoying your work and leisure times.

At times pin is constant and you may even get numbness in your legs. You may be frustrated that you can’t even tie your own shoe laces, or play with your kids, let alone perform totally at work.

You may have fears that it will become worse and that you may end up having surgery. Or worse become permanently disabled due to the pain, as a cure is very hard to find.

With sciatica you also need to stretch your Piriformis muscles, remove any tension off your discs and the most important thing to do is take pressure off your Sacro-Iliac joints.

The Sacro-Iliac joints are the link between your spine and your pelvis. These joints if tight create the muscles in your buttock to tighten (namely the Piriformis), they allow the pelvis to become unbalanced and then also allow distortion in the spine.

Correcting these joints will help the other areas to ease somewhat. However you still need to target these areas if you want that total health and freedom from sciatica pain.

So the question is…

How do you relieve pressure off the Sacro-Iliac joints?

Simple, you need to get a towel. A simple bath towel and fold it in half length-ways. Then roll it up so you have a cylinder shape.

Then you need to lie on your back, place the towel under your sacrum. This is the wedge shape bone at the base of your spine. Place the towel so that the top edge is at about belt height and the rolled towel points towards your feet.

To recap - the rolled towel is in the midline of your sacrum - the top edge at belt height - the rest of the towel is therefore over the sacrum and tailbone.

Then all you need to do is lie there. While you lie make two fists and place these under your head on the rounded area of the back of your skull. Why?

Your sacrum and occiput work together. So lying on the towel and with both fists on the back of your head helps to take pressure off the joints and ease other pressures in the spine.

It is as simple as that. Just lie there for about 5 minutes and then get up gently and go for a few minute stroll.

Easing your sciatica is easy and quick. You cannot do these types of techniques wrong and they help relieve pain quickly.

Until you suffer from a back problem you do not realize just how debilitating they can be, also just how painful. There is generally no respite from back pain, once you have an injury in this area; research into this problem is ongoing but so far only short term back relief remedies are available.

Bed and Back Pain - Be Backache Free

Where you spend one third of your life could be the cause of your back pain!

Your bed and your back pain, are they related? It seems some people are starting to listen to my entreaties about taking better care of their back as well as what to do when there is an actual problem. No, they are not beating a path to my (internet) door as yet. It also took a few months before my practices were full to overflowing; back pain at the moment is like an epidemic. Why is that? mainly because people are not informed of facts; rather, they would believe their traditional sources like doctors and sports teachers. The treatments and the maintenance of a healthy back are well covered. What has been forgotten or is ignored, is something peole do to themselves daily (or nightly); they sleep on a bed that causes them more problems than they are aware of.

How old is your bed? If it is more than ten years old, it is time to look at it. Maybe it is not strong enough for the weight you have gained. If it is over fifteen years, throw it out. Are you sleeping double? Is there a great weight difference? Then one of you or maybe both is not sleeping optimally.

One third of our lives are spent in bed, yet in proportion to other items we must purchase for our everyday living, it it turns out to be our cheapest investment… it should not be! We spend more for our computers and especially our cars, yet neither is as important as the bed we sleep in. The problem is the concept and the marketing. We are shown images of what we want to see, a woman (usually) lying on a mattress which is conforming to her bodily curves; the thing is, nobody sleeps like that! We curl, we have several positions, the most common is to revert to some adaptation of the foetal position. If you check the internet you will find literally thousands of bed variations, all claiming to be beneficial to your back.

Clever bed manufacturers should spend more time educating on the facts and promoting through therapists than furniture warehouses. In my small practice I am responsible for several new bed sales (with no commission). The most important fact that is lost on all, is that you don’t have to think about your mattress as the possible cause of your back pain or backache problems, it has to do with the entire bed, mattress and base! A new mattress on an old bed, especially a ’slatted’ base ( a frame with wooden slats stretched across and suspended by rubber ends) becomes very quickly an old mattress. It is like putting a new motor in an old car. The slat bed base is a very popular kind of bed here, maybe because it is cheaper to manufacture. As it is my practice flourishes as a result until they change to a real bed :-)

Naturally, optimal sleeping support is difficult, everybody is different and some can sleep hanging on a clothesline. Whatever the sleeping position, the classic inner spring mattress on a matching innerspring base is still superior. Technology has not improved upon this traditional bed although I have seen very good results with the three or five chamber air bed that has remote control for virtually every section. As for water beds…?

You need not take life as it comes.

Whiplash! Options for Treatment

Whiplash injuries are injuries that typically occur in car accidents. The classic injury occurs when your car is rear ended. In most situations the person has a seat belt on. When impact occurs, the seat belt holds the body close to the seat as the head quickly flexes forward and downward. When the forward motion of the vehicle stops the head quickly “whips” back. It is at this time that the injury occurs. Ligaments can be torn and vertebral segments can be forced out of place.

In actuality the more significant form of whiplash is when the impact occurs from the side. Our neck has much less range of motion going side to side, so when a side impact occurs it takes much less force to cause damage to the neck.

Treatment comes in many forms. The question you have to ask yourself is what are your goals with treatment? Are you looking for simply pain relief, or seeking correct of the damage that occurred? The simplest form of treatment is medication. Whether it be over the counter medication or prescription medication, the strategy is simply pain relief. Of course, the main detriment to this strategy is that the medication does not correct any structural damage that was caused by the accident.

Next, is physical therapy. There are various forms of physical therapy that can be helpful. Physical therapy modalities are typically administered by physical therapist or chiropractors. These can include exercise and stretching programs as well as modalities such as high volt galvanic stimuation, ultrasound, diathermy and the like. Each form of therapy has its specific uses depending on your injuries. The benefits of physical therapy is increased range of motion as well as attention to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of the affected regions.

The next form of treatment is chiropractic care. Chiropractic care, over the last few decades has shown increasing benefit in the treatment of whiplash. In most forms of whiplash there is misalignment of spinal segments as well as injury to the muscles, tendons, and ligaments surrounding the spine. Most chiropractors will utilize physical therapy on the front and back end of a typical visit. For example, given the amount of muscle spasm that is associated with many whiplash patients, some form of electrical stimulation is used to start the treatment visit. This is performed to reduce the amount of tightness or spasm in the muscles surrounding the spine. Next, a gentle chiropractic adjustment is performed to increase the mobility of the spinal segments, and then rehabilitative activities are performed to strengthen those same muscles to help stabilze the once weakened region.

Over the years I have seen all types of treatments used for whiplash injuries. As a chiropractor I obviously favor the complete chiropractic approach as described above. In my opinion it is the only form of treatment that addresses all aspects of the injury and gives the best opportunity for a favorable outcome. For most whiplash injuries I have found less and less situations in which a soft cervical collar is effectively used because the collar promotes immobility. In my experience most whiplash patients respond when mobility is increased.

About Sciatica Or Lower Back Pain

Sciatica is pain in the buttock and leg, caused by pressure on nerves in the lower back. The pressure can be triggered by slipped vertebral discs, pinched nerves or some forms of arthritis. As a result, treatment for sciatica is based on diagnosis of a damaged disc, despite the fact that nerves cannot be viewed with routine imaging tests. Consequently, over one million patients each year undergo magnetic resonance imaging scans (MRI) for sciatica and many are told there is no obvious cause for their pain. The main cause of sciatica is the prolapsing of an intervertebral disc , a slipped disc , which then presses on the nerve at the spinal root. Occasionally, this comes about through an organic problem such as a tumour pressing on the nerve, so it is important to consult a doctor.

It is important that you contact your chiropractor when the pain originally begins. A number of sciatica treatments can be prescribed (that don’t include surgery or medications) to help with your sciatica. Most sciatica pain syndromes result from inflammation and will get better within two weeks to a few months. Also, because the spinal cord is not present in the lower (lumbar) spine, a herniated disc in this area of the anatomy does not present a danger of paralysis. This may be the most painful, yet easiest, condition to identify. A ruptured or herniated disk is one that bulges and extends into the spinal canal, pressing on the nerve roots.

In the meantime, it is important to listen to the warning signals your body is giving you and stop doing whatever aggravates the pain. Half of all pregnant women experience back pain as a result of the narrowing of sciatic nerve exit sites. As the abdomen protrudes and weight is shifted forward, the normal lumbar curve is exaggerated, curving the spinal column and pinching the nerves. Pain down the leg can be reproduced by lifting the leg straight up off the examining table.

Many people find that using either hot or cold compression packs can help reduce pain. You can make you own cold compression pack by wrapping a package of frozen food in a towel. Your doctor may use the straight-leg-raise test - lifting the leg to a 90-degree angle without bending the knee - to help locate the point of pain. Other tests may include an X-ray, or scans like computed assisted tomography (CT or CAT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). You may need to use them until you can put weight on your leg without pain. Using these devices may decrease stress and strain on your lower back and leg muscles.
