Not So Happy Mother’s Day

Thousands of mothers will have a hard time enjoying Mother’s Day this year due to postpartum depression. One in 7 new moms get hit with this disorder, and for this 15%, Mother’s Day can be pretty tough. Most importantly, make sure she’s getting good care from a therapist who specializes in postpartum depression. Although a depressed mom may not be able to enjoy much at all these days, her mood may pick up on Mother’s Day when you take the following steps. Here are some tips to help the depressed mom in your life enjoy the day as much as possible:

DO NOT…

….buy her chocolates that come in a box. Most commercial chocolate candy will make her more depressed or anxious. After the initial lift in endorphins, she’ll crash and become worse. It may set her up for craving more and more sweets in an attempt to lift her mood. That creates an unpleasant cycle of junk food eating, crashing, gaining weight, feeling worse about herself, and slowing down her recovery due to a variety of psychological and biochemical causes.

DO…

….provide nutritious food so her brain chemistry will be fed. She will recover much faster with proper nutrients in her body. Some dark chocolate without the caramel type of junk on it is fine.

DO NOT…

….make plans for an event or excursion which will take a lot of energy on her part. Depression zaps energy, and she needs to have her life extra simple right now. Scheduling a trip to Disneyland will be too much and will overwhelm her even more.

DO…

…make a reservation at a special restaurant, hire a permanent housekeeper, set up regular care for her child(ren) so she can get regular time during the week to do things for herself. If the children are yours too, be on duty with them a few scheduled times during the week, every week. Your whole family will benefit.

DO NOT…

….buy her anything for the house or child(ren). This is not the time for the new microwave or jog stroller, even though she’ll ultimately benefit.

DO…

….buy her a gift that she can use completely alone. Anything that will help her nurture herself is good. For instance, a special skin cream she loves, a massage or day spa appointment (you provide transportation), and an upbeat book complete with leisure time to read it.

DO NOT…

….buy her a plant that will take ongoing care (unless she’s been asking for a plant). She already has her hands full, and any other living thing requiring her attention may push her over the edge!

DO…

….bring her beautifully scented roses. Roses provide lots of oxygen and can be quite healing.

DO NOT…

….have high expectations for her to have “fun.” That will feel like pressure to her. You love her and want her to feel happy, and so does she. But if she can’t, don’t take it personally. That will make her feel guilty for disappointing you and letting you down.

DO…

….have realistic expectations. This means, enjoy the day as much as you can and accept the fact that she’s doing her best to enjoy it too. Keep the attitude of, “she’s doing the best she can and she’s looking forward to feeling better and better. I’m glad I’m showing her how much I love her.”

Depression From Breakup of Relationship

A lot of time when a relationship ends you either does not know why, or you know why but just do not understand why that mattered. Weather it is mutual or one person held most of the blame, there is usually some amount of depression on either one or both sides.

If you are experiencing depression form a break up then you really have options even if you did not think you do. One of those options is to dwell on it, and let it get you down and hope that you will get over it soon. The other option is to do something to help you get over it.

If you dwell on it, you may realize what is going on and get over it real quick, but if you don’t have the luxury of getting over depression after a break up then, you can wind up in a bigger state of depression than you started out in. It is like your digging a hole and you can either stop and use the ladder while it still reaches the top, or you can keep digging until even with the ladder you can’t get out. You have the chance of getting so far down that you miss out on life while it passes you by and you do not even care.

However if you chose to get over the depression by taking actions to either avoid it altogether or bounce back faster than a bouncy ball you may find yourself a whole lot happier. When you need to get a jump start on getting out of your slump, then try getting together with your friends. Fighting Depression - Your Best Defense is a Body, Mind, Spirit Approach

With the number of people who claim to be depressed at near epidemic proportions, it’s time to take a step back and ask ourselves: Why are so many people are depressed and why are women significantly more depressed than men? Better yet, if you’re depressed, or know someone who is, what is the best course of treatment to beat the blues so you can begin to lead a happier, more productive life?

There are different factors that contribute to depression. Too many challenges in life (and not enough coping skills) are certainly factors. Un-related health problems, such as hypothyroidism or a vitamin D deficiency, can also make you feel depressed. And a chemical imbalance within the body can lead to depression.

Although many cases of depression are treated with medication, drugs alone rarely get to the root of the problem. Anti-depressants attack the symptoms of depression from a chemical perspective. But if you don’t address the other factors that contribute to depression, you may end up being medicated for a very long time. That’s why the best defense against depression is a wellness plan that takes a body, mind, spirit approach.

Body

If you’re taking medication for depression, you’ve begun working on the Body part of the whole person approach toward wellness. But there are other aspects of your body that you should address.   • Hug your children or spouse more often
  • Call in sick and take a “mental health” day

Feeding your Spirit simply involves taking action or doing activities that makes your soul feel good inside.Not an Easy Road

Taking a proactive, mind-body-spirit approach to fighting depression is not an easy road to follow, especially when you can’t even bring yourself to get out of bed in the morning. But if you truly want to heal yourself from the inside out, you really need to address all aspects of who you are: body, mind, and spirit.

Ask yourself, are your expectations realistic? Accepting a situation for what it is can eliminate your negative feelings. Taking action for your own negative ways of thinking and turning those thoughts positive means that you are motivating yourself to change. Tackle what is bothering you, and take a bad situation and turn it into something good.

A little humor helps my situation from time to time, meaning laughter does a great deal for our mind and body. Try not to constantly worry about being happy. Developing interests, activities, friendships, and learning how to cope with the emotional pain will conquer your personal problems and further solve your thinking habits. Doing this will get you on the road of happiness, as long as you put forth the effort.

The Physical Causes of Depression

Depression is no carnival. However, it may take a parade to understand the physical causes of depression.

Depression is a serious health condition. The physical causes of depression are characterized by a neurochemical or hormonal imbalance. Genes, hormones, illnesses, disabilities, medication, and diets cause these imbalances.

BIOCHEMISTRY

We have chemicals in our brains that affect our moods and emotions. Some of these chemicals are norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. A chemical imbalance will result if there is not enough, too much, or inconsistent usage of those chemicals. If the chemicals in our brains are off balance, or halts producing, this will affect our mood. It is just like performing in a parade. If one person stops marching, it could affect the rest of the parade.

GENES

Depression is hereditary. If one parent has depression, the child has a 27% chance of inheriting depression, and that percentage doubles if both parents have it.

HORMONES

Premenstrual Syndrome (PMS), Post Partum, and Menopause can cause depressed mood, mood swings, irritability, and tension or anxiety. About a week before a woman’s menustration, she may experience these symptoms. Some women develop Post Pardum after childbirth, which is characterized by depression or a deep sense of loss. Two of the female hormones, estrogen and testosterone, drop significantly 24 hours after childbirth. This rapid change can cause depression, just as the small change in hormones through menstruation.

ILLNESS

Medical illnesses often cause depression. Some examples are Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland), Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS), Parkinson’s Disease (PD), and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).

CFS patients feel as if they have a long lasting flu. Some symptoms like a sore throat, swollen glands, muscle pain, and severe prolonged fatigue cause depression.

The thyroid regulates hormones. An underactive thyroid gland will affect the hormones and chemicals responsible for mood and emotions.

In PD, the amount of dopamine, one of the “feel good” neurotransmitters responsible for mood, is critically low. This also affects the worsening of physical movement, which in effect, can cause the depression to worsen.

With MS, the condition destroys the nerves that transport signals for mood neurotransmitters. Without the nerves to carry the needed chemicals, this will result in depressed symptoms.

BURNOUT

This is similar to CFS, but CFS is long-term and burnout is usually short-term. This is characterized by a depletion of mental and physical energy. This is from a prolonged overwork and/or an overload of demands and obligations placed upon an individual. Aching joints, extreme fatigue, or a decrease in bone density and muscle mass are other physical causes of depression.

DISABILITIES

Approximately 20% - 30% of people with long-term disabilities have a depressive condition. Those with a loss of limbs, senses, or other abilities can suffer from low self-esteem or physical and emotional pain. Emotional pain can cause physical symptoms of depression. These symptoms may include muscle soreness, disturbed sleep, change in appetite, and lack of energy.

MEDICATIONS AND DIET

Most antidepressant medications come with a warning now, stating that it is possible the medication can make the depression worse than it was. This sounds counteractive; however most medications for depression are helpful and efficient. The use of certain medications, such as steroids and some blood pressure medications can cause physical symptoms of depression.

TRAUMA

A blunt force to the head can cause brain damage. This can alter many other functions occurring in the brain as well. An injury at work, school, sports, or other physical trauma can offset the brain and body’s natural rhythms.

A full medical and psychological evaluation will confirm the cause of depression. This will rule out other causes or underlining conditions. Treatments for physical causes of depression may include medication, electroconvulsive treatments (ECT), psychotherapy, art and dance therapy, physical therapy, or other recommended treatments.

Once we treat the physical causes of depression, we can march, without a halt, in that parade once again.
