Getting Fit - Keep It In The Family!

If you come down to facts, obesity is like committing a crime against yourself. It not only increases health risks but, obviously, makes one hate oneself every time one stands in front of a mirror. A firm and a fit body is an asset which will stand in good stead now as well as in old age. The hard part is that despite all resolves of regular exercise and keeping away excess and harmful foods, we tend to break them as soon as we make them.

It is much better to store fruit and other healthy snacks rather than what will give no nutritional value and only add fat to the paunch.

The next step is to start a workout routine together with the family. The workout should be such that the entire family can undertake with ease. Children and old people find complicated exercises difficult to perform due to age or overall health. Make sure that the workout you choose suits every member of the family and is fairly simple for every one to maintain over a long period.

Choosing a suitable fitness program is easy these days and you do not have to look around too much. As with every thing else these days the World Wide Web is a very convenient and suitable place to find one.

Remember you are not only helping yourself and the family to remain fit and able to meet the challenges of life but also remain healthy and avoid expensive medical treatment. A family fitness program is worth its weight in gold.

How Much Should We Exercise?

One recommendation from a recognized medical institution was that we should all engage in 60 minutes of exercise on a daily basis. And this didn’t count the regular unscheduled activities that people do such as walking around a shopping center, going to the grocery store, walking from their car to their office and back, climbing stairs, etc.

In my opinion, the 60 minute per day regimen is not within the reach or desire of the vast majority of people. Most of us have busy lifestyles, but we know that having a solid daily exercise routine is necessary to maintain our cardiovascular and overall health. This can be achieved by setting aside a more reasonable time of 15-30 minutes a day to do our favorite exercise, be it walking, jogging, stretching, etc.

If done in moderation, your favorite exercise can keep you in good physical condition whether you are a pre-schooler, school age, young adult, senior citizen, male or female.

So choose an exercise that you enjoy and get off the couch and do it on a daily basis. The more that your exercise incorporates the three major elements of endurance, flexibility, and strength, the better chance you have of enjoying good health throughout your life.

Getting Started At The Gym

With all the attention on the weight problems around the country and all the different products to help you lose weight and get in shape where do you start? It can all be pretty overwhelming. Not to mention intimidating.

I want to start off by saying most of us have been there. Most of the people who frequent the gym had a hard time going for the first time and getting into a routine that worked for them. Going to the gym for the first time can be like the first day at a new school, you think that you are going to look out of place and everyone is going to be watching you. True you will get some looks but that is only because most of the people working out would rather be doing something else so they notice people entering the room. It does not matter if it is your first time or your one hundred and first time people will notice you when you walk in the room.

Now that you have made it to the gym, what do you do once you get there? I recommend getting a tour from one of the staff members. This way you know where all of the equipment is so you don’t have to wander around trying to figure out if you need to sign up to use cardio equipment, you are able to locate the weight machines and the free weights if you are interested.

Now that you have finished that part I recommend setting up a few sessions with a personal trainer. This will do a couple of things. One it will force you to go to the gym because you have an appointment. Two it will help you to design a workout that is right for you and give you a good place to start. A trainer can show you different exercises and stretches to help target different muscle groups that sometimes can not be done on some of the machines.

The most important part of all of this is not to give up. Don’t compare yourself to the other people in the gym. If you are next to someone on the treadmill don’t try to match their speed if they are going faster than you, who knows they may have been doing this for years already. Just be proud that you are making steps to a healthier you.

Mow Your Way To Better Health!

Every summer, my grandmother and I would go on our pilgrimage to across the state, paying a visit to every relative in the line. Among the rolling green hills of California’s central valley my uncle and his family had made their home, which is where we would spend most of the summer. My uncle Chris and his wife were master gardeners. Their expansive back yard was the first place I ever saw a real compost bin, and their raised garden beds, with their thick, dark soil hid countless wriggling red worms for my amusement. I also remember the single most fascinating gardening accessory I had ever seen. Uncle Chris’ old push mower was nothing but an outdated nuisance to his sons, whose chore it was to cut the lawn, but to me it was an engineering marvel. It’s rotating blades whirred across the grass, sending clippings and the scent of fresh grass flying across the yard. I always got to rake the clippings and deposit them in the composter, but what I really wanted to do was cut the lawn.

As early disciples of the Xeriscape movement, we had no lawn at out house, and I longed to reach the age when I would be considered large enough to operate the push mower. Finally, that summer arrived. I only stood about six inches taller than the mower itself, but I was determined. I got nearly half the lawn mowed before I gave up and conceded the mower to my cousin. To be honest, I have no idea if I ever tried mowing with a push mower again, but to this day, I recall the work-out I got.

This brings me to three months ago, when I had an incredible epiphany. I’m always saying I need to get more exercise. I spend most of my time sitting in traffic, sitting in my cubicle, or sitting on the couch in front of the TV. All my single-girl clothes have made their way to good will and I’ve decided that it’s time to act. We needed to budget, and our gardener just happened to be moving to Texas. What a perfect coincidence. Remembering the push mower, I talked to my husband, and we decided to invest in a reel mower. All the electric mowers were easily three times the cost.

For the last three months, I’ve mowed the front yard and back yard once a week and I’ve been feeling great. I used to have back pain that I blamed on my office chair, but I noticed the other day that it has been gone for the last two months at least. All through college and my busy working life, I was constantly sick. I thought that I was just a sick person, but I’ve been in good health this whole time. At first, it was hard to do one whole lawn, much less front and back, but I split it up through the week, and now I’m a mowing machine! My husband is so impressed with my newfound vigor that he’s threatening to take up mowing as well. We may have to start our own gardening service.

Fitness for Newbies - How to Pick a Right Place To Workout

In this article I am going to write about how fitness newbies should pick a right place to workout. Most people who will read this article, will have at least two gyms in their local area, who knows, maybe there are even more and I am going to give a brief explanation, what for fitness newbies should look for in a gym.

I personally think that there are two types of gyms: hardcore, only free weights and almost everyone in those gyms are bodybuilders and the second type of gym is probably more familiar to you. The best example would be your local fitness center. It doesn’t matter, if you will come to the center with your kids or alone: there’s a machine for every type of person.

If you still don’t know, what kind of gym you want to pick, let me to explain a bit:

If you are a person, who looks into fitness as a simple activity, but not part of your lifestyle - your local fitness center would be the right choice for you, but if you are a person, who looks into fitness like a lifestyle, you should definitely go to an “Underground” gym. People with different interests gather in different gyms, so always be sure that you will be between people, who have same interests like you. If you want to build muscles seriously, you have to be between people with the same interests. If you will pick a wrong gym, you will not achieve good results as fast as you could in the right gym.

Most of the time family fitness centers have more different types of machines, a lot of treadmill and steppers. If you want to lose weight, this is the kind of equipment you will need, but if you want to gain more muscles and strength, you have to look for a gym, with a lot of free weights. Yes, you can find free weights in the family fitness center, but the thing is that bodybuilding veterans don’t like those places.

Its up to you, I can’t tell what kind of fitness person you are and you have to make a choice, where do you want to workout.

Easy Weight Training For Women

Weight training for women can be one of the best tools used for weight loss. Weights have an unbelievable effect on the body that leaves people in high calorie burning states. For women, it can some what feel overwhelming. Not to fret, I’ve created this guide to give each woman out there a chance to experience weight training first hand.

Dumbbell Press: This is a great exercise the will work your chest. Grab a set of dumbbells and start out light. Lie back on a bench, cock your elbows out and push the weights up in the air. Repeat this 10 times and take a 1 minute break. Repeat this process 2 more times to give you 30 total reps.

Bent Over Rows: This exercise will work your back. Grab yourself another set of dumbbells and place one on each side of a bench. You’re going to workout one arm at a time, so place your right knee on the end of a bench, bend over and put your right arm on the bench to fully balance you. Your back should be parallel to the ground. Use your free left hand, pick up the dumbbell and pull it up to your chest. Let it go back down and repeat this for 10 times. Take a 1 minute break. Repeat this process 2 more times.

Dumbbell Squats: This exercise will work your thighs and butt. Pick up another set up dumbbells, this time you should be able to get heavier weights. Hold onto these weights at your side, keep your back straight and bend your knees. Lower your body to the position of sitting in a chair. Stand back up straight and repeat this process for 10 reps. Take a 1 minute break and repeat the process 2 more times.

Dumbbell Sit ups: This exercise will work your abs and core. Pick up one dumbbell, start out at a light weight. Lie down on a gym mat and hold the weight with both hands at your chest. Proceed to do a sit up. If you’re unaware, when you do a sit up, you should try to move your chest and shoulders straight up in the air, not toward your knees. Repeat this process for a total of 10 reps. Take a 1 minute break and repeat the process 2 more times.

These are more than enough exercises for weight training for women. This will work your entire body. I’ve given exercises that are less intimidating, by using dumbbells.
