The Magic of OM

OM Meditation is an ancient meditation technique that has survived from ancient times in India and Tibet and China until today. Basically, the sound OM, according to Hindu Sages and Religious Scholars, is the sound that completely represents the entire verbal sound phenomena that lies within each one of us. OM, also spelled AUM, begins with the A (AH) sound, and finally culminates with the M (MMM) sound with the lips closed. So, according to these great scholars and sages, all possible prayers that might be actually vocalized within this “sound domain” of OM, indirectly have been said through OM.

The reason I call “OM” magical, is because in life we all seek “silver bullets”, if you will, that will address and help us to solve difficult problems. Well, because OM is so extremely simply, one might even call it the spiritual silver bullet that will help us overcome obstacles we face in daily life. I totally believe in this idea. Why? Because the Divine, essentially, is kind and wants to help us to experience life with a sense of purpose, love, compassion, and goodness, and to be totally aligned with “IT” in this experience. So, if we can adopt OM meditation as our central practice, or at least as an additional practice that complements another practice we have, then that is great.

OM is not going to necessarily grant us one million dollars or a beautiful new car instantly because OM is not some “genie”, nonetheless, it is the sound that perfectly aligns us with Divine Spirit, our True Essence, and with that alignment, new possibilities emerge for us, in all ways that we expect as well as in ways that we cannot even imagine! Like the Bible even says “come to me first, and then I will pour out all blessings upon you”.

It is important for us to first align ourselves with our Source, Divine Spirit, and the greatest saints of the Far East agree that OM is a sound that perfectly symbolizes this Source. So, with that said, let us re-examine our goals, and incorporate OM meditation to help us live with a new alignment: with our true Divine Source. OM meditation represents all Divinity, however, at the same time, if you are attached to a certain practice, by all means continue, but don’t deny yourself the opportunity of meditation where you sit in deep silence and stillness and experience for yourself the very beat of the cosmos: OM.

The Labyrinth - A Meditation For Those Who Can’t Sit Still

Until quite recently I assumed a labyrinth was a maze full of dead ends and paths meant to confuse you. In fact, the labyrinth has one way in, and one way out. It’s a metaphor for our journey to self and back out again into the world and has been used as a meditation tool for centuries.

I discovered the labyrinth quite unexpectedly. While in Lucca, Italy my husband and I decided to visit the ‘labirinto’ that was featured so prominently in the tourist brochures. Not knowing anything about labyrinths at the time, we envisioned a huge maze carved into stone in the bottom of a cathedral where we could compete to see who could find their way out first without getting caught in a dead-end. I imagined it would be similar to the maze in The Shining (sans a knife-wielding Jack Nicholson!)

We spent what seemed like hours searching for the elusive labyrinth. We knew we must be close because there was a sign for the labyrinth carved into the wall on a particular cathedral. Surely it had to be here!?

Well, it turns out that the sign for the labyrinth (which we had taken as an indication that we were getting close) was actually THE labyrinth. The famous labyrinth in Lucca is about 2 feet square and carved into the marble on the wall outside of the church! A little anticlimactic for us two who had envisioned spending an afternoon running around in it!

Although our experience of the labyrinth wasn’t exactly what we had expected, the image was very beautiful and I was intrigued…what was it used for?

I discovered that the labyrinth is actually a metaphor for our search for spiritual wholeness and has been used for centuries as a tool for meditation. Although the Lucca labyrinth was likely used by tracing the path of the labyrinth by hand, most labyrinths are designed so that you can walk their path.

Walking the spirals drops you from your thinking mind into your intuitive nature and connects you to your inner wisdom. I walk the labyrinth when I am struggling with a question that I can’t seem to solve on my own, when I want to let go of something, or when I just want to see a new perspective. I use it as a time of self-reflection and connection to something bigger than me.

For those who struggle to sit still in meditation, the labyrinth is the perfect solution.

Meditation for a Better Life

Are you one of those unlucky people that dread turning the light off at night due to a constant struggle to get to sleep? Meditation aids in quieting and clearing the mind. When your mind is quiet, you feel peaceful and have a better chance of experiencing a good night’s sleep as well as a more balanced life.

Anyone can apply meditation to their daily lives to achieve a calmer and more relaxed state of mind, even during stressful periods in their lives. Meditation has been described by many as a state of “restful alertness” which means that although your metabolism slows down like it would when you are sleeping; you are still awake and conscious. This allows your mind to remain clear from your usual continuous thoughts.

Meditation trains the mind and with repeated practice of the art a greater sense of control is experienced. In some cases meditation can aid in bringing to surface dormant tensions. By identifying these tensions and becoming more aware of them one is able to take control of them as well as other external pressures. If focus is kept on the present, less emphasis is placed on past and future worries, and success and self fulfillment is more achievable.

Furthermore, meditation has been proven to keep you feeling younger. With repeated meditation, a person’s metabolism is enhanced and the probability of falling ill from certain life threatening disorders is less likely. There is however a variety of meditation forms, and one needs to find the meditation style that suits them the best. You should notice the difference that meditation plays in your life as soon as you have found a meditation type that complements you.

Breath awareness is one of the most important and usually the first steps in your journey to meditation. To practice breath awareness you can follow the following easy steps:

1. Sit down in a comfortable position on a flat surface with your legs crossed and your hands resting on your knees.

2. Close your eyes and relax. Slowly focus all your attention on your natural breathing. Notice how it feels, sounds, how fast you are breathing as well as any pauses and changes that you feel in your breathing. The main point here is to focus completely on your breathing only.

3. If you feel that you start thinking about something else, slowly move your focus back to your breathing. It will become easier to keep focus through time and practice.

4. Complete these steps for a few minutes, and then slowly increase the time in your next meditation session.

5. Do not end the meditation session abruptly but rather stay relaxed with your eyes closed for a couple of minutes and slowly reflect on how you are feeling. You should feel calmer than when you started your meditation process.

Practice this simple meditation process on a daily basis and you should notice positive changes occurring in both your daily life and within your precious sleeping patterns.

5 Tips To Help You To Unit Body, Mind And Soul

Passion is what brings your mind, body and soul together. There are many ways to go about finding and living out your passions. Stop and think about the things that help fire your passion. For some it is a daily meditation or prayer, a particular diet or just a good book. These are some things that help people find the balance they seek.

The idea of balance is an interesting one since it evokes different feelings. Passion is described by some as the same energy you feel when your soul is moved. Most people however, leave out the concept of the soul. Not surprisingly, this eastern mentality is not widely understood by those in the west.

When I say passion, I do not mean sexual passion. This is about spiritual passion. For me it’s taking a yoga class. It allows me to be present and teaches me patience and acceptance. At the same time, I gain strength and flexibility with each asana, or posture. It allows for time to take a deep breath and relax.

Passion is different things to many people. Here are five tips to help you decide:

1: Do your future goals inspire passion? Do they incorporate body, mind, and spirit? Making money is good, however, the process through which you make money should be what causes the passion. The journey is what makes the goal sweeter. A better choice would be something more esoteric, less mundane than money.

2: Remember your accomplishments. It’s best not to get down on yourself for every little mistake. By remembering how much good you do is one of the best ways to nurture your body, mind, and spirit. Continually beating yourself up is the fastest way to crush your soul. Eventually, the mind will dominate the body and you will get sick as a result.

3: Create happiness scenes. You can do this by meditating on a safe and happy place that you can create or a real place that you have been to or plan to go to sometime. When things in your life get tense, as they inevitably will, go to your safe place and meditate for a few moments.

4: Look forward to something. Having something to look forward to, like a trip or maybe just the weekend, helps tremendously. Downtime nurtures the body, mind and soul. Finding a new place to go can be exhilarating. Perhaps you can plan a weekend getaway to someplace you’ve always wanted to go. It might even help to go alone. This way there will be no interruptions and no one else to worry about.

5: Practice affirmations. Find one that will alleviate your stress and practice it. Pick three affirmations and say them out loud to yourself in the mirror everyday. This works! Just as I mentioned briefly in point number 2, if you continually tell yourself the same message over and over the mind eventually believes it. It will become true.

Three simple affirmations to get you started with are:

I am always safe and secure.

The universe provides everything I need.

My income is ever increasing.

Find the Meditation Techniques That Work Best For You

Meditation may be unfamiliar to many people, but it’s been around for over 5,000 years. Although it began as a type of religious ritual for the Buddhist, it has now become a method of well being and inner peace used and prescribed by many. The way meditation works is the person gives their entire attention to one thing and doesn’t think about anything else. The goal of this it to relax and calm your mind. Of all the forms of tranquility and peace available (drugs, alcohol, love, etc.), meditation is the most long-lived and permanent.

Meditation as well as meditation techniques is actually an art of consciousness, where we are aware of only what we are concentrating on at the time. There are many different meditation techniques available. Although meditation is not yet referred to as a science, it is being researched more and more due to some positive results that have been proven in helping with physical problems. One such instance is brain scans showing that meditation change the way the brain is working and feeling. As of yet, this is still in research stages, but different medication techniques have been tried for many years with patients dealing with many stress-related ailments.

There are different meditation techniques, each with their own method and benefits. After you’ve been doing meditation, you will probably have tried a few different meditation techniques and have found one you like best. The classic setting method of meditation is probably the most effective for many people. Although some will choose to sit motionless for hours, others don’t find this necessary. Your meditation should take place in a quiet room where there will be no disturbances. Many choose to sit cross-legged on the floor while others enjoy a recliner. Your eyes can be open, slightly open to allow a little light in or half open. If you choose to meditate with your eyes closed, make sure there is a light on in the room so light can get through your eyelids so your brain will remain alert. The purpose behind this is that when your eyes are closed, your brain begins to shut down and get ready for “sleep mode”. For meditation to work, you should be relaxed like you are sleeping yet be fully awake.

Another method some like to use is the sit-stand methods, which has you sitting quietly for fifteen minutes, then standing for two minutes, sitting for fifteen and so forth for a total of 49 minutes. This method can be done three or four times each day. This method eliminates cramping of the legs, which many experience after sitting for a long time as well as teaching how to meditate in motion.

The use of a recliner also works very well for meditation. The chair should be reclined in a medium recline and your shoes and socks should be off. Many are able to meditate for up to two hours with recliner method technique.

Buddhist Meditation Offers the Ultimate in Tranquility

Meditation has been around for many years and is practiced by many people and many religions, with Buddhism being the major religion for meditation. Buddhist meditation is an essential part of their lives as a goal towards the realization of Nibbana. Nibbana is considered as the ultimate goal in Buddhism. It’s not a physical thing that one can see or feel. To reach the realization of Nibbana, one has reached the end of craving and suffering. Nibbana is considered the ultimate bliss and total liberation for all suffering-a total rebirth of the mind and soul.

Living the good life and being the best person they can be in not enough. Although being a good person and doing good things will make the person happy and fulfilled, it will not bring the total enlightenment they require. It is only through Buddhist meditation that they can reach the realization of Nibbana, which is the goal of every Buddhist. The Buddhist learns in explicit details the techniques of Buddhist meditation through the Buddhist scriptures. Although it’s important to understand the concept of meditation, it’s more vital that the individual learn the actual practice. Two different methods of Buddhist meditation are used in the religion. These two methods are ’samatha’ and ‘vipassana’.

Samatha means calm or tranquility, which is what the individual is striving to achieve. The beginning stages of samatha have to do with concentration of the mind as one-pointedness. Many different subjects that can be used such as water, light from a candle among many others. A very popular and widely used technique is anapanasati, which is mindfulness of breathing. The body and mind both gain their calmness from concentrating on the breath. Samatha is more than just concentration; however, they need to get rid of the five vices of anxiety, sensual desire, ill will, sloth and doubt. When this goal is reached through this form of Buddhist meditation, great happiness is gained but they still cannot reach Nibbana. This is where vipassana is necessary.

Vipassana is an entirely different approach of Buddhist meditation than samatha. This method rather than concentrating on other things is based on seeing things as they are without any aversions or attractions. Each thing that we do we need to acknowledge. If you are dusting the wall, you need to take note in your mind that you are dusting the wall. This first stage of vipassana is called bare awareness. Bare awareness goes with an insight of our inner lives. This method of Buddhist meditation is used with breathing meditation and can take one to the realization of Nibbana. Many use a combination of vipassana and samatha.

Discover The Art Of Meditation And What It Can Do For You!

Meditation

I have been learning and practicing the art of meditation now for 20 years, but it is only recently that I have started to do it on a regular basis. I am finally learning the true benefits of mediation and how it can make an enormous improvement to your life and truly make you a better and happier person.

Meditation is all about finding the right balance. It’s about emptying your mind and transporting yourself to another place. A place where you can relax and just be in the moment, without the worries or work or the stressors of life. Meditation is about calming the mind to create a calmer you and in turn teaches you to calm your breath down, helping you to better manage your asthma.

If meditation is done correctly it can make an enormous difference to your attitude, your stress levels, your outlook on life and your breathing.

Mediation is a great way to unwind and to get some quality you time where no one is placing demands on you. It’s also a great way to improve your thinking, clear your mind and help you to solve problems. It takes the focus off your worries and onto yourself and calming your breath down very gently and slowly. Meditation teaches you that you can control your breathing and when you learn how to mediate properly you should be better equipped to calm your breath down, hence helping to settle your asthma. However, I always recommend doing any alternative treatments in conjunction with your regular asthma medication. If in the throws of an asthma attack, it’s important that the first thing you do is take your medication, then you can sit or lie down and try to calm yourself and your breathing down.

Meditation should help you to feel calmer and more relaxed. You may even find you are more in control, less aggressive and more willing to just ‘go with the flow’ about things you normally would stress over. Meditation helps you to accept things better and makes you see how much stress can affect and how poorly it makes you feel. Mediating for me makes me feel like I have had a nights sleep or an instant face lift-without the time, the cost or the pain thrown in.

I often find the answers to problems through my mediation. I might not know it then, but certain words come up or ideas, and I just think fair enough and dismiss it for now and then when I come out of my meditative state, I’ll think about them again or even write things down that have come into my head and sooner or later they make perfect sense. More often than not if I am stuck on something, I meditate and the answer almost always comes to me. It’s like now that my head is clear and nobody is hassling me, I can think straight and actually find the solution to the problem that has previously weighed so heavily on my mind.

Mediation without a doubt is my savor and nearly every single time calms me down and makes me realize that the problem or my stressor is not as bad as I first thought. Meditation for me is the reason I very rarely yell at my kids and nowadays I don’t get anywhere near as angry as I used to. Meditation is also the reason why my asthma has improved, even though I do still take my medication at times, it has without a doubt taught me to calm my breathing down and to stop myself from going into panic attacks and worsening my asthma.

Everyone tends to mediate differently and some may say that I don’t do it the right way, but for me it works and I have seen great results from it. I have also been practicing meditation for a very long time now and have tried many different ways of meditating and find the way I do it now to be the most effective with the best results.

Hence, I have written down my first 5 steps of learning to meditate and how to get your body into that nice relaxed state.

1. Lie down on the ground in a quiet room, that is slightly darkened but ideally not too dark. Lie down with your hands either by your side or resting on your chest. It’s a good idea to have your legs flat on the ground, open slightly with a pillow resting underneath your knees so as not to put too much pressure on your lower back. I sometimes even meditate with my knees up and my feet flat on the ground.

2. Have your eyes closed and very slowly take 3 deep breaths. This helps to center you, to calm you and to allow you to concentrate on you and your time. Just allow yourself to take note of your breath and how it very gently flows in and out of your body

3. Notice how your body connects with the floor, which parts touch the floor and which don’t. If any part of you is not quite comfortable shit around a little until you are completely comfortable and starting to feel relaxed.

4. Gently let each part of your body go. Start moving your head from side to side very slowly to loosen it up; then allow your shoulders to sink into the floor; relax your upper back and then slowly move down to your lower back and allow all the tension to just melt away; move down to your stomach area and just let it flop and hang there; next let your thighs fall to the side slightly and feel your upper legs relax and feeling loose; your knees too can flop out to the side and sink into the pillow, lastly slowly wriggle your toes and your feet and just allow all the tension to drain away from them.

5. Once you feel your body nice and relaxed, I now want you to imagine your favourite place. Somewhere that is just for you and only you. Somewhere that is quiet and peaceful and a place where you are happy to spend your time. Somewhere where no demands are placed on you and you are simply by yourself enjoying the scenery and the quiet. It could be the mountains, the water, a field, the beach, a special room or even just sitting in your car. Any place that relaxes you and makes you breathe a sigh of relief just because you are there and no-one else is there to bother you. No-one else can take this place away from you as it’s just for you to spend some quality time by yourself and enjoy how peaceful life can be.

Mindful Meditation - Touching The Untouched Aspect Of Your Life

Mindful meditation is all about being present in your life. It is a practice that helps you become truly proactive. Usually it has been found that human nature is reactive to everything. Everything we do is most of the times just a reaction of what we think or feel. It is very important for you to understand that because of this reactive nature, we always pursue an endless cycle of disappointment and conflict. We can convert this unhappiness and disappointment into an endless cycle of pleasure and peace by remaining neutral to our feelings and thoughts. This is what mindful meditation is all about. There is an aspect within us that remains untouched for most of our lives. This untouched aspect is spontaneous and awake. We can connect with this untouched aspect by practicing this form of meditation.

Filling Yourself With Positive Energy

It is not easy to achieve the magical power of mindfulness. It demands for constant and sincere practice. Mindful meditation is very much like any other form of meditation. The only difference is that you do not have to focus on something beautiful while you are keeping your eyes closed and reciting the meditation mantras. You have to achieve neutral feelings towards everything. Whatever thoughts come to your mind, you just let them enter. But, make sure that you have to be neutral towards these thoughts. It does not matter much whether they are good thoughts or bad, you have to give them the same level of attention. This way, the energy of your thoughts will get no feeding and you will be able to get in contact with that elusive untouched aspect of your life - the aspect that is spontaneous and widely awake. As soon as you get in contact with this aspect, your heart, mind and soul will get filled with a lot of positive energy.

The Benefits

There are virtually endless benefits of practicing this type of meditation. Let me share some of these benefits with you…

  • It breaks the vicious cycle of thought, feeling, and reaction.
  • You no more get attracted towards negative energy.
  • You no more try to outsmart the entire universe. You have learned to be humble. You have learnt the precious lessons of surrender and gratitude.
  • You experience an increased level of happiness and joy.
  • You experience enhanced acceptance, compassion and tolerance.
  • The feelings of resilience and relaxation are increased.
  • This type of meditation enhances your ability to control your feelings and personal responsibility in a much better way.
  • Your psychological well being is improved.
  • The level of anxiety in you gets decreased.
  • Any bad habit, such as substance abuse is reduced.

You will be happy to know that mindful meditation also brings several spiritual benefits for you. You will have a much greater conviction of the existence of a higher power. Meditation and the Law of Attraction

People have been meditating for ages, but not many people in the west know that the practice of meditation not only brings peace of mind, but also helps to attract things that we want.

There are lots of people now that have not heard of the Law of Attraction. A universal law that states that we attract into our lives what we think about most. Basically we attract to us what we spend time thinking about. So if you are constantly worrying about being lonely, you are attracting into your life more loneliness. A lot of people also heard of meditation, a practice used by millions to help calm their minds, regain focus and improve their lives. Together they are a powerful tool to help to transform your life.

We must understand that the Law of Attraction is working all the time whether we want it or not. We can’t turn off the law of gravity. Similarly we can’t turn off the law of attraction. It is a law that guides the way our universe works. What we need to do is to control the way it is working for us. We must make it work for us, not against us. To do this we have to work with our minds in a healthy and conscious way so that we are able to bring into our lives happiness, abundance, prosperity and peace and health. Meditation will help us to do this. Meditation helps us to achieve mindfulness. Mindfulness is a method of becoming aware of everything that takes place in our individual scope of perception. Through mindfulness we are able to pay attention to and to understand what it is we think, sense and feel.

Mindfulness, through meditation brings all of our subconscious thoughts to light. This is very important because it is most often those subconscious thoughts that sabotage our lives and manifest more things that we do not want. Meditation is a passive process of understanding, so we aren’t going to be trying to do anything with those negative subconscious thoughts other than to become aware that we have them, and to become aware of what they are. We will be able to see for ourselves the parallels between those subconscious thoughts and the things that we have manifested in your live.

The key with meditation is not to turn the mind off, which is impossible; the point is to get in tune with our mind. We must accept what those thoughts are, regardless of whether they are bad or good, we should not attach emotion to them. Meaning that if the thought is negative we should not get upset by it, and if the thought is good we should not throw a party. We should simply pay both types of thought the same amount of attention.

Meditation helps us to achieve mindfulness which then allows us to take control of our lives and for many people it’ll be the first time to take a proactive role in their lives. Instead of reacting to what we think and feel we will be in touch with the deeper aspect of ourselves. By not getting attached to our thoughts and feelings we will able to delve deeper and act from that place so that we are attracting what it we really want to. I urge you to give meditation a try. Become mindful of your thoughts and actions and see what a difference it can make in your life when you have control of it.

If you would like to know how to meditate, here is a simple meditation. You will want to find a space where you can sit comfortable and will be free of distractions for about fifteen minutes. Remember that you are not trying to turn off your mind; you want to calm the mind. To do this you need to focus on one thing, whether it is your own breathing, a single word, a single sound, you should focus on it.

Make sure that you are doing proper breathing, which is inhaling through the nose at a slow steady pace, feeling the breath working its way into your body and moving down into your lungs all the way to your diaphragm, and then you slowly and steadily let the air out, feeling it leaving your body the same way it came in. Breathe this way the entire time you are meditating.

The Importance of Meditation for Procrastination

It would be a better option to consider meditation for procrastination, especially for those people, who suffer from procrastination largely because their mind is replete with stress. It is estimated that meditation offers a best solution for stress, since it helps in decreasing the levels of tension from the mind. Hence, it is mostly used in the far eastern regions of the world with much success through all these years. Apart from its use for religious purposes, meditation has also benefited those workers, who procrastinate and even for those people who prepare for their exams. The main reason for a person procrastinating is the fact that they mainly involve a confused mind, which is largely unable to deal with the situation that is at hand. For such people, the best way is to embark on meditation for procrastination. This is largely because, the process of meditation helps in cleansing the mind. This, in turn, helps them in thinking rationally and clearly and without the undue influence of outside forces.

More on Meditation:

It is also estimated that the process of meditation for procrastination helps in the improvement in the levels of concentration. This is mainly because, majority of the people suffering from this disorder are those who face problems with the concentration of tasks at hand and are emotionally unstable. Meditation for procrastination helps in reducing the negative emotions and also, improves the self esteem of a person.

The other reason that needs to be considered for undertaking meditation for procrastination is the fact that, it helps in improvement of metabolism and gives a general promotion of well being, which allows students to concentrate better. In addition, it also proves beneficial to the adults as they feel better to work for an entire stretch in a day.

Miscellaneous benefits of Meditation:

It is up to the individual to understand, as to what it actually takes for meditation in addition to the purpose for which a person meditates. A person needs to be clear about his expectations out of the meditation exercises also. Once a clear idea is acquired, a person would be in a position to prepare a good meditation schedule such that it does not get missed anytime ever.

Overall, the moment a person undergoes deep meditation for procrastination, he would have a good peace of mind and would be in a better position of communicating with others. This would ensure that a person stops procrastinating once and for all and, becomes an achiever who would be in a position to complete whichever tasks are required to be performed. Apart from banishing procrastination, meditation has numerous benefits. The quicker a person meditates, the better it is for him.
