One of the things about Healing Touch, about which I am most fascinated, is how doing simple techniques at the time of a trauma or in an emergency situation prevents a “full blown situation” from occurring.

I’ve experienced this many times in my own kitchen. I’m a pretty good cook (at least John thinks so!) but I can be a little careless at times. Stirring a pot of boiling soup or spaghetti sauce and having it splash on my hand has not been an unusual occurrence for me. Or burning myself on the heating element because I’m not paying attention and smelling it before feeling it - yikes! But I learned through Healing Touch that the best thing to do in these situations in literally right in our hands - and that is to use our hands to heal. The “key” is in remembering to do it.

I can remember several years ago getting a bad burn when cleaning a coffee pot that was still hot and which shot boiling steam right onto my hand. I immediately started doing Magnetic Passes: Hands in Motion and didn’t stop for about 10 or 15 minutes. The area was still a bit reddened and tender but it didn’t blister like it did when this happened before. I did “hands in motion” on and off throughout that day and the next day there was hardly a trace of what happened - and even the tenderness went away.

That experience anchored my understanding of how, when we intervene energetically immediately after a trauma or a break in the integument of the skin, we can actually prevent the full manifestation of wounding to occur. Therefore, the conventional steps of wound healing, as we know them to be, do not ‘need’ to take place - that process has been accelerated by our work.

Two years ago I was leaving the parking lot of my gym and I witnessed a guy on a bicycle being hit by a car. He flew up in the air and landed on his head and shoulder…and he was not wearing a helmet.

I immediately pulled over and got out of my car, and others who witnessed it ran over to him as well. One of those people was a nurse who was quite efficient - we made a good team. As we did our assessments and called 911, I immediately started doing “hands in motion” over his head - and didn’t stop until the medical team got there.

As a former ICU/Trauma nurse I know a lot about brain swelling - and I thought, if this in any way can minimize any brain swelling for this individual - then I’m going to continue until he gets into the ambulance.

When the ambulance got there I had to stop. I left, never knowing - but then I thought - would we know anything anyway if he was followed? It’s hardly an area that can be well researched, but we know that no harm can be done with a heart centered approach, and based on what we do know - this can absolutely help.

It is such a gift that we have these wonderful tools of our hands to care for ourselves and others in times of trauma. Don’t hesitate to use them when you see or witness an accident, or are around someone in immediate need of assistance. Know that your simple, yet profound, work of Healing Touch can be done.
